TAKING IN THE VARIOUS WWII SITES OF PEARL HARBOR

Heath Harmon enjoys exploring new destinations. One highlight was a visit to Hawaii’s most populated island, Oahu, where Heath Harmon experienced a “doors off” helicopter tour that took in sights of the Diamond Head and the Pearl Harbor.

One aspect of Pearl Harbor that often surprises first-time visitors is that it’s not a single site but rather a group of museums, historical markers, and ships that provide a look at one of the most tragic and momentous events of World War Two. After taking in the Visitor Center, guests can proceed to the Arizona Memorial, a stationary platform planted in the harbor that stands directly over the USS Arizona, sunk by the Japanese. Some 1,177 seamen aboard lost their lives on December 7, 1941. A related monument is the USS Oklahoma Memorial, with the USS Bowfin Submarine also housed in the harbor and open to the public.

Still intact and moored at Ford Island, the 900-ft long USS Missouri provides a positive bookend to a Pearl Harbor visit. On this battleship, Japan signed its official declaration of surrender in September 1945, which brought the Second World War to a close. Because the location is on an active military base, visitors must take a short bus ride from the Visitor Center to tour the USS Missouri.

THE COMPASS AS A MAGNETIC FIELD-BASED NAVIGATION AID

The compass is an ancient navigational tool constructed of a circular dial with printed directions, a housing, and a needle. The latter is made of metal-like steel that can hold a magnetic charge for an extended period. The needle both detects and responds to magnetic fields that surround the earth.

The planet has an iron core that reflects gravitational pressure and is a combination of solid-crystal inner core and liquid outer core. Movements within the outer core are thought to generate the Earth’s magnetic field, which takes form of the north and south poles. The magnetic poles actually vary slightly from the planet’s axis of rotation, which is used in defining the geographic poles.

The magnetic North Pole thus shifts over time as the Earth’s magnetic field itself changes direction. In September 2019, compasses at Greenwich pointed directly at true north, a phenomenon that had not been observed for 360 years. That said, the two values are close enough that the compass has been an essential navigational aid throughout the centuries.
